I dont believe in God and maybe that is the problem. I believe that we are the ones that will end the world. We wont be able to blame or thank a higher being for saving us from ourselves. In the final analysis, we will have ourselves to blame.

We know the dangers and we know the consequences. We talk about the end of the world, but how many of us believe in it. They talked about it in the 60’s with the Cuban missile crisis and in the 80’s with Cernobyl. But we mock those who built bomb shelter’s in their back yards. We know about anthrax, small pox, and ebola but we consider the hand washing of obsessive compulsive disorder a disease. Why aren’t all of us staying awake at night fearful of what will come? Why are we allowing these things to go on? Can we be too careful?

I dont think that the world will end in the white glow of a nuclear explosion or at the microscopic hands of a virus. I think that if humanity dies it will die a slow death of poisoning. Sure we make moves to save the rainforest and clean of the environment, but sometimes too late. Each chemical we dump, each gas we release is safe until proven otherwise. We did not know that some chemicals acted like synthetic hormones until the population of Lake Michigan birds and the Everglade’s alligators started to decline. We didnt know that smoking caused cancer until scientist told us. It is possible that aspartame converts into formaldehyde inside of us and is slowing poisoning us with every diet soda we drink, but most of us dont know that. We will keep poisonig ourselves and then trying to administer the antidote until it is too late.

If that is true have the first signs begun already? Is there a decrease of intelligence and an increase of violence? Are our youth different from our elders, or am I just paranoid. Are we declining slowly?

I dont know the answers, I just hope I dont live to see them. It is possible that the world would be better but I am afraid of such great changes. Maybe I’ll change my mind but if the world does end I would like to be one of the first casualties. So until then I will sit here smoking an unfiltered Camel and drinking diet Coke watching the skies for missiles.
