We are far too dependant on medicine to stay alive.
The next major war will likely involve chemical weapons, and in order for the attacker to surely prevail they will have to destroy our medical facilities. Since war will only destroy our medicine, and not the virii and disease that they prevent, the diseases will evolve faster than we can provide cures.
